For K–12 students in Madison, it’s the first day of the school year! Today on the show, Carousel hosts her annual back-to-school check-in, this time with newly appointed Madison Metropolitan School District superintendent Dr. Carlton Jenkins.
They spend the hour honing in on current educational topics like: addressing institutional racism in public schools, supporting teachers during this unprecedented time, making virtual learning a success for students and parents, looking at the budget and the two school referenda on the upcoming November ballot, encouraging a love of learning in students from the distance, and following the direction of public health professionals in determining if and when to return to in-person instruction this school year.
Dr. Carlton Jenkins is superintendent of schools for the Madison Metropolitan School District. Previously, he served as superintendent of the Robbinsdale School District in Minnesota, chief academic officer for the Atlanta Public School System, and superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools in Michigan. He holds a master’s degree in educational administration and a PhD in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
