Today in 1945: Private Eddie Slovik becomes the first American soldier since the Civil War to be executed for desertion, and the only one who suffers such a fate during World War II.
Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered Slovik’s execution be carried out, he said, to avoid further desertions in the late stages of the war.

Tomorrow is the seventh annual Grillin’ for Peace, featuring 67 “old school” Weber charcoal grills arranged in a peace sign on frozen Lake Wingra, just off Vilas Park Beach. Grillers pay a fee to take part in the event, with all proceeds going to Savory Sunday, a local effort to feed the needy in downtown Madison. This is tomorrow from 10:30am to 1:30pm.
