Today in 1492: The Taino people discover a bewildered Spanish-sponsored imperialist named Christopher Columbus, who thinks he has landed in the East Indies. Columbus comments that the Taino are (quote) very well built, with very handsome bodies and very good faces.
He writes that they ought to make good servants, and offers to bring some of them to Spain so they can (quote) learn to speak.
On January Sixteenth , Columbus will take captive Tainos for the return journey. When the weather turns cold, the majority of them will die aboard ship.
