Geoff Brady and Kia Karlen are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary by hosting a Musicians for WORT benefit this Thursday evening (9/1) at the High Noon Saloon, 701 East Washington Avenue in Madison.

The music starts at 8:00 p.m. and features a bevy of bands, including such local stalwarts as The Tiny Band, Girls Are Go, Yid Vicious, Hirt Alpert and Yammer. A suggested donation of $10 will help keep WORT 89.9 FM Community Radio on the air.
Other groups scheduled to perform are The Velvet Smash, Optometri and theremin-enhanced Ramones tribute band The Theramones. Adding a note of comic absurdity, the Sockrates Sock Puppet Carnival of Morals & Logic will give a dramatic reading of selected oddball letters to the Willy Street Co-op Reader.
Geoff Brady shows his serious percussion chops in the Madison Symphony Orchestra, while Kia Karlen plays French horn in the classical quintet Black Marigold. Yet their talents transcend genres, from pop to folk and beyond, as exemplified by the klezmer troupe Yid Vicious and the brassy neo-lounge sounds of Hirt Alpert.
At Thursday’s benefit show several friends will help Geoff & Kia mark 20 years of musical marriage. Among them are WORT Friday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Jonathan Zarov as well as musical collaborators Bucky Pope, Matt Appleby, Anna Purnell, Lisa Marine, Julia Ziemer, Maggie Weiser, David Spies, Bob Jacobson, Dan Hobson, Greg Smith, Tim Sullivan, Kenny Stevenson, Kelli Larsen and Daithi Wolfe.
Occasional accordionist Kia promises that this show will comprise a “festival of unusual instruments.” She and her husband Geoff, a vibraphonist, invite you to share their love of Madison’s weird music scene by shlepping over to the High Noon Saloon on Thursday night.
WORT, of course, would be grateful for your donation at the door. We bring the many splendored sounds of Madison to the whole wide world at http://www.wortfm.org.
