If you are looking for a way to warm up after a long day in the Wisconsin wind, or are clogged up with a cold and need to breath, this ginger hot toddy will make you remember that winter or the ickiness you are feeling is only temporary, and that the sun, the warmth, and good feelings will once again return.
Ginger Hot Toddy
What You Will Need:
1 whole large chunk of ginger root
½ cup to 1 cup of sugar or honey (add more or less to taste)
Brown Liquor (Whiskey, Brandy, Rum)
Hot Toddy Ingredients:
2 ounces brown liquor (Whiskey, Brandy, Rum)
4-6 ounces Ginger-Lemon “Tea”
1 slice of lemon
4 cups water
1 large chunk of ginger peeled and sliced into chunks
½ to 1 cup of sugar or honey
Peel and cut up the ginger root and put the pieces in a saucepan with the water and 1 cup sugar over medium-high heat. Let the mixture come to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add in juice from 1 lemon and turn off heat.
Pour a mug until it is almost full with the ginger-lemon “tea” and then add 2 ounces of your liquor of choice. I prefer whiskey for this hot toddy, but if you don’t like whiskey, or don’t have it on hand, any other brown liquor will do just fine. Add a lemon wedge and serve hot. This recipe should serve approximately 4 people, depending on the size of your mugs.
The ginger-lemon “tea” is great without alcohol and it can be saved in the refrigerator to be reheated and served later, either with or without the liquor.
