The scorching of the American west shows no sign of abating, with 2018 wildfires covering almost 5 million acres and accounting for six deaths so far. Despite the U.S. Forest Service spending nearly half its diminished budget on firefighting, the fires still seem to have the upper hand. Cassandra Moseley is the Research Professor and Director at the Institute for a Sustainable Environment and the Director of the Ecosystem Workforce Program at the University of Oregon.
