In the wake of the mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas over the weekend, we turn our attention to gun violence for today’s episode with guest host Gil Halsted.
First, we talk to Patrick Smith, criminal justice reporter for WBEZ, about Chicago’s most violent weekend on record—and how Chicagoans have a different take on gun violence than what we often hear in the national conversation.
In the second segment, we discuss the public health dimensions of gun violence with Mark Slidell, director of the pediatric trauma unit at the University of Chicago, and Jonathan Kohler, trauma medical director at American Family Children’s Hospital and host of the Surgery Sett podcast. They offer their perspective as surgeons and members of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA), who recently released a position statement on firearm injuries and children.
