Dr. Robert Gehrenbeck, director of the Wisconsin Chamber Choir, talks with Ava Borelli about the upcoming concert, Hope Springs Eternal on May 13. The concert program features Baroque composers G.F Handel and Jans Zelenka and newly commissioned works about freedom in memory of John Lewis (composed by Roland Carter, written in gospel style) and Rosa Parks (composed by Augusta Read Thomas, written for women’s voices).
The Choir will also perform “Prairie Spring,” written by UW Whitewater professor and composer Christian Ellenwood featuring words by Willa Cather. The program also features Ysaye Barnwell’s piece, “Hope.” The concert features Sinfonia Sacra (members of local orchestras and baroque ensembles) on some of the pieces and solo singers.
Dr. Gehrenbeck announced that they recently added a well-known Ukranian piece about the emotional toil of war on family relationships, sung acappella.
Hope Springs Eternal will be in the First Unitarian Society atrium on May 13 at 7:30. In-person tickets are available. Concert will be livestreamed as well at wisconsinchamberchoir.org.
