The volume of food we all throw away is truly staggering. Some 40% of the food produced in the U.S. never gets eaten. While households can do more to reuse or compost food before it ends up in the landfill, you have to look a little further along the supply chain to find the real culprits. Nine out of the ten major U.S. supermarket chains do not report their total food waste. That’s the key finding from “Checked Out: How U.S. Supermarkets Fail to Make the Grade in Reducing Food Waste,” a new report released this month.
Joining Eight O’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing by phone are the report authors, Jennifer Molidor, Senior Food Campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity and activist and founder of the Ugly Fruit and Veggie Campaign, Jordan Figueiredo.
