India’s former Union Minister P. Chidambaram said that the disputed Indian-held portion of Kashmir is nearly lost for India because of the central government’s ongoing attempt to forcefully suppress dissent there.
Addressing a meeting organized by the public discourse platform Manthan on Friday, Chidambaram predicts that without reversal of the current repressive policy against Kashmir, the situation will worsen.
He described the oppressive methods of the Indian government as a “terrible mistake,” and that they have left the seven million people of the Kashmir valley feeling alienated.
He said a statement by Army Chief of Staff Bipin Rawat that anyone who interfered with defense operations would be treated as anti-national was the last straw.
