On this day in 1900, Racine hosted its first automobile race. The course was through fourteen unpaved miles to Western Union Junction and back to Racine. The racers were A.J. Horlick and Robert W. Hindley. Horlick started the race in the lead but stalled one mile outside of Racine, where Hindley overtook him. Horlick could continue the race, but Hindley won.
Today at six pm, the McFarland Library is hosting Jeff Steuer for his lecture Climate Reality. Steuer is a retired water engineer with the United States Geological Survey. In this lecture, he will share what he learned with the Climate Reality Project, the environmental group founded by former vice-president Al Gore. On this date in 1936, the state of Wisconsin issued the first Unemployment Compensation Check in the United States. The amount on the check was for fifteen dollars and made out to Neils N Ruud. Rudd sold it for twenty-five dollars for its historical value sometime later. The check now resides with the Wisconsin Historical Society. Wisconsin was the first state to establish an Unemployment Compensation program.

On this day in 1893, Burleigh Ariand Grimes was born in Emerald, Wisconsin. Grimes played major league baseball from 1916 to 1934. He won two-hundred-seventy games over nineteen seasons for seven major league teams. Grimes was known as “Ole Stubblebeard” for his habit of not shaving the day he was scheduled to pitch. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 and passed away in 1985 in Clear Lake, Wisconsin.
Today from five to seven pm, learn to fish with Madison Park and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This class meets at Filene Park. There is no cost to attend but anglers over the age of sixteen will need a Wisconsin fishing license. Wisconsin’s Fishmobile will be onsite with all equipment needed to participate. Her accolades include twelve Grammy Awards, eighteen MTV Video Music Awards, sixteen Guiness World Records, and many others.

On this day in 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed. Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe was installed as president for the first year. In 1922, the association was renamed the National Football League and has since grown into one of the biggest athletic associations in the world.
