On this day in 1930, animated character Betty Boop made her debut. She first appeared in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes, which was produced by Max Fleischer. Fleischer is the founder of Fleischer Studios and creator of several beloved animated characters, including Betty Boop, Popeye, and Koko the Clown.

On this day in 1787, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed his chamber piece “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” [ eyen cleyen naw-ckt-mew-seek]. Often translated to A Little Serenade or A Little Night Music. The piece four movements and was written for a string quartet consisting of two violins, a viola, a cello, and a double bass. Though it is often performed by a full string orchestra.

Today in 1919, beloved football team the Green Bay Packers were founded. Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun gathered a score of young athletes together and organized the team. The Green Bay Packers remain the only non-profit, community-owned major league football team in the National Football League. You probably knew that already, but did you know that the rivalry between the Packers and Chicago Bears dates back to 1921, making it the oldest rivalry in football history?

On this day in 1939, the first public showing of the film Wizard of Oz premiered in Oconomowoc. According to the fansite The Wizard of Oz dot info, “no one is sure exactly why a small town in the midwest received this honor.” The official premiere happened on August 15 in Hollywood.

On this day in 2008, real life mermaid Michael Phelps won three (count ‘em) THREE Olympic gold medals in a single day at the Beijing Summer Olympics. The events were the two-hundred meter individual medley, the two-hundred meter butterfly, and the four by two-hundred meter freestyle relay. Phelps has not been in the public eye for some time, so I can only assume he returned to his home in the sea.
