Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Day holiday. Tune in to WORT throughout the day for special programming in honor of the Reverend Doctor King. At noon, tune in for the annual State of Wisconsin ceremony honoring Dr. King, followed at 1pm for a documentary tracing Dr. King’s last march.
Then at 6pm, tune in for the 37th annual Madison/Dane County King Holiday Observance. This live event will feature performances by the MLK Community Choir, a presentation of the MLK Humanitarian Award, and a keynote speech from Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X and award-winning author, educator, and producer. On today’s date in 1958, Canadian hockey player Willie O’Ree of the Boston Bruins became the first Black player to play in the National Hockey League. Fifty years later – in 2018 – O’Ree was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

On today’s date in 1954, artist Cindy Sherman was born. Sherman is well known for her photographic self-portraits, using wigs, costumes, makeup, prosthetics, and props to alter her appearance.
Every third Thursday, the Neighborhood House Community Center holds a community meal. Tomorrow, Neighborhood House will have a take-and-bake seasoned pot roast with root vegetables.
