Music: What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?
Today, in 1852, Frederick Douglass gave his speech ‘What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?’ to the Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society in Rochester. The speech condemns the celebration of Independence day as a hypocritical sham, as Black citizens were not, in fact, independent like their white counterparts.
In observance of Independence Day, the Madison Metro Transit is following the holiday schedule. Information on how to get around can be found at the local bus shelter or at cityofmadison.com/metro.
There is also no refuse, recycling, brush, or large item collection today. This is also in observance of Independence Day. Madison residents who normally have their refuse and recycling collected on Monday should place their carts to the curb for collection on Tuesday morning. More information can be found at cityofmadison.com/streets.

On this day in 1947, an unidentified flying object crash landed in a field near Roswell, New Mexico. The United States government claims that it was a balloon used for the United States Air Force, but a cover up of the crash leads a large number of people to believe that the vehicle and occupants are extra-terrestrial in nature. This has been in dispute for decades. As upstanding citizens of the world, we know what to really believe, right? Riiiight?

On this date in 1881, the ice cream sundae as we know it was invented in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The story goes that a patron of a soda fountain shoppe asked for chocolate sauce on top of a dish of ice cream, an ingredient that had before only been used in soda. Soon the treat was only served on sundaes, but consumer demand dictated that the treat be sold the rest of the week too.
Two other towns in two other states also claim to have invented the ice cream sundae around this time, but those guys are posers and should not be believed.
