She holds the second-longest reign of the United Kingdom in recorded history, surpassed by the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth the Second.
Today at one pm, Voces de la Frontera is hosting the Rally and Demonstration for Drivers’ Licenses and Citizenship at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Join essential immigrant workers as they conclude a historic nine-day march from Milwaukee to Madison to pressure the Biden Administration and Congress to include citizenship for 11 million in the infrastructure and jobs budget bill. Today from noon until five pm, Madison Public Library’s central branch is hosting a blood drive with the Red Cross. The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every two to three seconds. Today in 1992, Boyz-two-Men released their single “End of the Road.” The single went on to win multiple awards, including a Grammy for Best R-and-B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, Best R-and-B Song 1993, and Billboard Song of the Year in 1992.
Today at six pm, the City of Madison engineering department is hosting a public information meeting to discuss the Spring Harbor Watershed Study with the public. The study is looking at ways to reduce flooding on the Spring Harbor Watershed. The public meeting will discuss the project with the public. Register at cityofmadison.com/engineering.
Today at two-thirty pm, the Sun Prairie Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new splashpad and playground facility at Wetmore Park. The public is invited to arrive at two pm for a walk through the facility prior to the ceremony. Today in 1959, the Circus World Museum in Baraboo opened to the public for the first time. Circus World Museum was started by John M. Kelley, the personal attorney to the Ringling Brothers. Today, the Circus World Museum is an iconic attraction for the city of Baraboo.
Starting today, the Wisconsin Historical Museum is open to the public. It is featuring a new exhibit detailing the history of Wisconsin Women and voting, with a focus on the passage of the 19th Amendment and the role of Wisconsin women who fought for the right to vote and other civil liberties. The anniversary of the 19th Amendment was in 2020, but it’s not to late to see these archival documents in-person. Hours for the Wisconsin Historical Museum are Thursday through Saturday from eleven am to three pm.
Today at six-thirty pm, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom is hosting an online discussion for the book Caste: the Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. In her latest book, Wilkerson argues that race in the United States is more like a caste system, similar in many ways to Modern India or Nazi Germany. This is the insurgent radio kiosk for Friday, July 2nd
Today in 1927, Milwaukee’s Oriental Theater opened for the first time. This lavish movie palace operated as a movie theater until 1972. In the seventies and eighties, it served as a venue for live performances. It has since converted back to films. The Oriental Theater has been showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show as a midnight film since January 1978.
It is Independence Day weekend, which means cities and towns across Wisconsin are celebrating with community festivals. Here are a few of the ones in communities around the city of Madison:
South in Evansville, celebrations are happening at Lake Leorta Park. Fireworks are scheduled for July fourth at dusk.
Out east in Whitewater, celebrations are happening in Cravath Park. Fireworks are scheduled for July third AND July fourth. Fireworks start at ten pm both days.
Closer in Stoughton, celebrations are happening in Mandt Park all weekend, with fireworks scheduled for July fourth at dusk.
North in DeForest, celebrations are happening at Fireman’s Park with fireworks scheduled for July fourth at dusk.
Finally, in Monona, celebrations are happening all weekend at Winnequah Park. There is a shuttle service available for people who cannot find parking close by. Fireworks are scheduled for July fourth at dusk.
