On this date in 2004, Massachusetts became the first US state to legalize same-sex marriage. The state processed 6,100 same-sex marriage licenses in the first six months after legalization. Same-sex marriage ceased to be a state issue in June 2015 when the US Supreme Court ruled that all bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
Starting today, University Health Services is offering COVID-19 vaccination to anyone over the age of twelve. Vaccination appointments are available Monday through Friday from eight AM to four-thirty PM. You do not need to be affiliated with the university to get a vaccination. Today in 1999 marks the release of “Millennium” by the Backstreet Boys. This is the third studio album by the titular boy band. It sold more than 24 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling albums of all time. Now that’s larger than life!
The Goodman Community Center is hosting a virtual chat with its new director Letesha Nelson. Today in 1989, Do the Right Thing premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film saw critical and commercial success since its release, earning nominations for multiple awards including the Academy Awards, and winning several others. In 1999, it was preserved in the National Film Registry for historical significance during its first year of eligibility.

On this day in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope sent its first images back to Earth. These first few images were meant as test pictures to help focus the telescope. The Hubble was meant to take pictures of the star HD96755. These first images did not contain the star.

Music: Paper Planes
On this date in 1985, Wisconsin native Tony Felch set the world record for longest distance flown by a paper airplane. Felch was a daredevil with a dream of appearing in the Guiness Book of World Records. According to his obituary in the LaCross Tribune, he settled on throwing a paper airplane for 193 feet. He held the record until 2012, when a couple schmucks from California flew a paper airplane 226 feet and 10 inches, which is just showing off.
The Third annual Break-Away three-on-three basketball tournament series continues this evening at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center. Participation is open to middle and high schoolers. No need to pre-register; just show up with two friends, or singles will be dropped into a team. Due to COVID, there is a thirty player limit, masks are required, and they ask you to stay home if you feel sick. More information is found at cityofmadison.com/parks/calendar.
