On this day in 1956, the first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest was crowned. Lys Assia of Switzerland won with the song “Refrain.” Eurovision, as it’s commonly called, is a European song competition known for extravagant visuals and pop-style folk songs. The 2021 Eurovision Contest happened this past weekend.
After being closed for over a year, all Madison Public Library locations are opening up. Expanded services include in-person library browsing, self-pickup holds and checkout, and in-person access to desk services. All locations will be open from ten am to six pm, Monday through Friday, with the exception of the Monroe Street branch. More information at madisonpubliclibrary.org.

Music: Star Wars Theme
On this day in 1977, “Star Wars” was released in theaters. The movie was directed by George Lucas and went on to spawn a global franchise that is still popular today. Star Wars was later renamed “Star Wars: Episode 4: A New Hope.” If you have not seen a Star Wars movie at this point, you are in a very small minority. This year marks the forty-fourth anniversary of Star Wars’s release, which will give you about a year to prepare your cosplay for the forty-fifth anniversary next year.
SSM Health is partnering with a myriad of local organizations to host a free vaccine clinic at Urban League. Vaccines will be administered starting from two pm to seven pm. Today in 1967, The Beatles released their eighth studio album: Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Based on the title track, the album is conceptualized as a performance by a fictional band. Some notable songs from this album include “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.”
The virtual panel Just Conversation is tonight at six pm. This monthly chat is hosted by the organization Just Dane. This month’s conversation brings four restaurant entrepreneurs and activists to talk about innovative community efforts, lessons learned from the pandemic, and action items the community can take to support small businesses. Today in 2018, the third studio album by South Korean boy band BTS debuts in the number one slot on the US Billboard 200. The album is titled Love Yourself: Tear [tier, like what falls from your eyes]. It remains the highest charting album by an Asian band to this day.
Tonight at six pm, the Madison Public Library is presenting BIPOC [buy-pock] Genealogy one-oh-one. If you are interested in starting your own ancestry research but are not sure where to begin, this panel will give you the foundation you need. From practical tips to ethical and emotional questions to consider. This panel will center the experience of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, but best practices are also applicable to international and adoptee-related records. Today marks one of the cardinal dates from which all other dates are calculated. Greek philosopher Thales predicted a solar eclipse would happen on this day in 585 BC. It did happen, and the eclipse led to a truce between the Medes (mee-dees) and the Lydians (lid-ee-ans), who were warring at the time.
The Madison Metropolitan School District is not holding school today. Wishing all students and their families a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.
Starting Tuesday, June 1, the City of Madison is resuming enforcement of all on-street parking restrictions. This includes time limits on non-metered streets and an increase in the night and weekend daily rate for all public parking garages. Temporary restaurant pick-up loading zones will remain in effect. The Transportation Office will remain closed to walk-in services.
Effective on Wednesday, June 2, Public Health Madison and Dane County is lifting all public health orders. This includes mask requirements and gathering and capacity limits. On May 18, sixty-three percent of Dane County residents had at least one dose of the COVID-nineteen vaccine. By June 2, Public Health Madison and Dane County estimated that number will be at seventy-five percent. Individual businesses and organizations may choose to continue to enforce their own masking policies.
