Today in 1944, the film “Going My Way” premiered in New York. Starring Bing Crosby as a young priest taking over a church from an older priest, played by Barry Fitzgerald, Going My Way was directed by Leo McCarey and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning seven. Also on today’s date, Bing Crosby was born in 1903.
Today is the first weekday for the Madison May Bike Month Challenge. Register online and log your bike rides for rewards based on the amount of miles and days biked. On today’s date in 1959, the first annual Grammy Awards celebrated musical accomplishments from the year previous. The Grammies had two separate ceremonies in California and New York. “Nel Blu Dipinto de Blu (Volare)” by Italian songwriter Domenico Modugno won both the Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Today marks the birthday of actor Marc Alaimo. Born in Milwaukee in 1942, Alaimo has 98 acting credits to his name, including 1990’s Total Recall with Arnold Schartzenegger, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and The Naked Gun Thirty-Three and One Third: The Final Insult.
A new Dane County Public Health order goes into effect today. The order increases gathering and capacity limits for all businesses. As of today, indoor gatherings are limited to 350 people with food and 500 people without food. All outdoor gatherings should ensure all people can maintain six feet physical distance at all time.
Also under the new order, restaurants and taverns indoor dine-in capacity may be up to 75% of approved seating capacity with physical distancing. Other businesses can also allow up to 75% capacity indoors.
Finally, face coverings are not required when actively playing an instrument that has a bell cover as long as people are six feet apart at all times. A bell cover is a piece of fabric that covers part of a woodwind or brass musical instrument.

On today’s date in 1947, an earthquake rocked eastern Wisconsin. The epicenter of the quake was near the shore of Lake Michigan just south of Milwaukee. The quake was felt as far north as Sheboygan, as far south as the Wisconsin – Illinois border, and as far west as Waukesha. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the only casualties were some rattled dishes that fell from their shelves.
Two events will happen at the Wisconsin Book Festival today. Both events are virtual and free to the public.
At Four P.M., Alison Bechdel (Beck-dell) talks about her latest memoir titled The Secrets to Superhuman Strength, where she documents her fascination with fitness fads throughout her life. She is in conversation with Cheryl Strayed.
Then, at Seven P.M., Senator Elizabeth Warren talks about her memoir titled Persist. In Persist, Senator Warren explores the six perspectives that influenced her life and advocacy.

Music: Beethoven’s 9th (Chorale) Symphony
On today’s date in 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony premiers in Vienna. Composed between 1822 and 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth is one of the most performed symphonies in the world and arguably one of the greatest works by Beethoven.
The Third annual Break-Away three-on-three basketball tournament series continues this evening at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center. Participation is open to middle and high schoolers. No need to pre-register; just show up with two friends, or singles will be dropped into a team.
