Today is Memorial Day. Shortly after the civil war, communities all over the United States held memorials for fallen soldiers. Decades went by and America fought in several more wars, giving communities further reason to continue these services. In 1968, Congressed passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and declared it a federal holiday. This change went into effect in 1971.
In observance of Memorial Day, there is no recycling, trash, brush, or large item collections today. Madison residents who normally have their trash and recycling collected on Mondays should place their carts to the curb for pick up tomorrow. Only residents that have a Monday collection day will experience this delay. Normal trash and recycling schedule resumes tomorrow. More information at cityofmadison.com/streets.
Today at 1pm, Madison Vets for Peace is hosting a Virtual Memorial Day Peace Rally. There will be guest speakers, live music, poetry, and more, concluding with the laying of carnations at the Spanish Civil War Veterans monument. Today in 1215 AD, Beijing was conquered by Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan is the founder of the Mongul Empire, the largest empire in history. At its height, the Mongul Empire extended from the Black Sea to the Sea of Japan. The Battle of Beijing marks the beginning of Khan’s conquest in the northern part of modern day China.
Starting today, the City of Madison is resuming enforcement of all on-street parking restrictions. This includes time limits on non-metered streets and an increase in the night and weekend daily rate for all public parking garages. Temporary restaurant pick-up loading zones will remain in effect. Today in 1953, Queen Elizabeth the second in coronated in Westminster Abbey, London, England. Queen Elizabeth has been ruling the United Kingdom and its commonwealth nations ever since, marking her the longest running monarch in British history.
Effective today, Public Health Madison and Dane County is lifting all public health orders. This includes mask requirements and gathering and capacity limits. As of May twenty-eighth, sixty-five point eight percent of Dane County residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-nineteen vaccine. Today in 1989 marks the beginning of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing, China. Since April of that year, protesters marched to end corruption in the Chinese government. The protests spread from Beijing to other cities across China. The Chinese government soon declared martial law and sent military troops to quell the protests. The death toll remains in dispute, with figures ranging from a few hundred to several thousand.

Today in 1916, Gaylord Nelson was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Nelson served the Wisconsin State Senate for ten years, was elected Wisconsin state governor in 1958, and later went on to the U.S. Senate. He is the founder of Earth day and the namesake for Governer Nelson State Park along County Road M, north of Middleton.
