Today on the Buzz: Sure Thering and Johnny & Marie Justice join us to talk about their Intentional Welcoming Initiative!

Intentionally Welcoming Community is a public service program of the non-profit Design Coalition Institute.
The initiative poses the question: “How do you define an ‘Intentionally Welcoming Community?’” (One resident’s definition is: “I can come into a space with any of the multiple identities that I embody and feel recognized and welcomed”). “What makes me feel safe and welcome?” “What makes others feel safe and welcome?”
Recent events have increasingly brought tensions between identity groups into public consciousness, both nationally and locally. When our team proposed the motto “An Intentionally Welcoming Community” we understood that a motto is not enough to overcome the uncertainty or fear that some people in historically marginalized groups live with every day.
Our challenge is to put that motto into action to help address these tensions and counteract discrimination. The “Intentionally Welcoming Arts Collaborative” is one response to that challenge.
The idea of “Intentionally Welcoming” is grounded in a research-based approach to healthy communities and wellness. Based on this research, the intended outcomes (value to the public) include increased mutual support among diverse groups, which enhances the resiliency of our communities to respond collectively and effectively during stressful times.
Our advisory team includes: Dr. Paul Neary and Dr. Lisa Baker (expertise in child abuse, trauma-informed care, & resiliency); and Sharon Kilfoy (expertise in community arts projects).
