Following their blistering AtwoodFest set this past July, Minneapolis-based funk sorcerer Jaedyn James and her eight-piece backing band The Hunger are set to invigorate those attending the 43rd annual WORT Birthday Bash at High Noon Saloon this upcoming Sunday, December 9th.
While the expansive outfit has only released a handful of raw, soul-drenched tracks online, their regional touring, entry into NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2017, and slew of music videos suggest 2019 might be a breakout year for the ambitious group. Toward that end, James’ band is in the midst of a support tour following the release of their kaleidoscopic Outright EP in October.
Lead track “No Reason” sees the group dabble with dark, sultry R&B as James croons about a former lover, while “Killin’ It” initially evokes hip-hop trio Digable Planets before erupting into an affirmation of self. Following these efforts, the closing song embraces listeners with a warm, lilting melody, as if Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes collaborated with the late Amy Winehouse, the band’s horns and strings weaving a soulful tapestry fit to close any celebration.
For those who missed them at this year’s AtwoodFest, Jaedyn James & The Hunger’s “full-tilt” live shows are memorable, earning the group a spot as one of twelve new Minnesota-based acts to discover in 2018. Given the built-in party atmosphere of WORT’s 43rd birthday celebration, this event promises to be an electric evening, with Tony Kannen & The Sound Garden Crew priming the audience with a slew of rockin’ and bluesy tunes before the Minnesota funkstars take over the stage.
Sponsored by Madison Essentials and Marquette Hotel, doors open at 6:30 with music starting at 7:00 PM. Attendees may enjoy birthday cake between sets and bid on Fuegos and Capitol City Tattoo gift certificates, upcoming shows at Barrymore Theatre, WORT T-Shirts and Posters, Leftist Art Pair and more during the silent auction. Those planning on attending are encouraged to join and share the event on Facebook. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 the day of the show and are available online, by phone at 877-987-6487, or in person at High Noon Saloon, WORT Studios (118 S. Bedford St.), and Lakeside Press on Willy St. This event is 18+.
