Tune in for more music with Madison’s own Jeffry Eckels this afternoon. The tribute has now been extended and Chuck France is spinning some of Jeff’s music on Wednesday’s Journeys Into Jazz. He’ll be featuring Jeff playing with Geri DiMaggio, Randy Sabien and John Thulin. Also, next week on Strictly Jazz Sounds host Jane Reynolds will be playing more tracks of Jeff jamming with Randy Sabien, John Thulin, and Harmonious Wail. You can also go to our archives anytime at wortfm.org to hear the July 9 edition of Strictly Jazz Sounds where Jane Reynolds celebrated Jeff’s music in the 3:00 hour.
The Madison jazz community was deeply saddened last week by the sudden and unexpected loss of one of its own. Bassist Jeff Eckels was prominent in the jazz scene in Madison for many years. He was in the house band with John Thulin and Clyde Stubblefield on WHA Radio’s “Whad’Ya Know” from 1987 to 2003. He performed regularly in clubs and festivals, and was generous with his encouragement and support of new musicians on the scene.
Jeff’s energy was contagious, whether he was playing a ballad or a bebop tune, as he always had serious fun whenever and wherever he was playing. On Strictly Jazz Sounds this week during the 3:00 hour, longtime WORT jazz host Jane Reynolds will present a special tribute featuring recordings of Jeff Eckels with some of the musicians he collaborated with while in Madison. You can stream the archive of Strictly Jazz Sounds Thursday July 9, 2-5 PM, on community radio WORT 89.9FM and wortfm.org.
