WORT 89.9 FM is hiring a journalist to produce our weekday evening newscast.
You: A journalist passionate about the importance of local news to our democracy. Someone who loves uncovering a hidden truth and wants to shout it from the rooftops. You’re detail-oriented and obsessive about the facts, open-minded, fair, tenacious and you possess an irrepressible curiosity. You’re cool under the pressure of live radio and unflappable when faced with the unexpected.
You’re equally at home covering politics at the State Capitol, Madison city council meetings, a high school student walkout, scientific discovery at UW, or an upcoming election. You enjoy digging through pages of state legislation, wading through a flooded street, touring the local landfill and tracking down sources. You’re comfortable guiding a small team of professional, student and citizen contributors who want to make a difference in their community.
Us: A small but scrappy independent radio station committed to truth-telling and freedom of expression. We’re consistently voted “Madison’s Favorite Radio Station” by Isthmus readers and have an almost 50-year history in Madison broadcasting. We produce award-winning stories honored each year by the Milwaukee Press Club and Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. Our signal covers south central Wisconsin, reaching more than half a million people in a dozen counties. Our station is located in downtown Madison, with city, county and state government headquarters just blocks away.
We offer a flexible and casual working environment where the coffee is always flowing.
We emphasize public access to the public airwaves. We promote civic participation, community, and cultural expression. Our reporters and producers go on to work for nationally-distributed radio and TV programs, magazines, digital media outlets, local newspapers, public and community media stations around the country.
