Stu Levitan welcomes two guests this hour – starting with award-winning novelist J.F. Riordan, who will be presenting her new novel A Small Earnest Question this Thursday night at 7 in a virtual visit presented by our friends at Mystery to Me Books. In about half an hour, an archived interview from 2007 with then-Senator Joe Biden about his book Promises to Keep.
About four miles off the tip of Door County mainland in northeast Wisconsin lies Washington island, a landmass of about 25 square miles, home to 708 people in the 2010 census. Writing about Washington Island – the real place, but with make-believe people — is the business that has occupied J. F. Riordan since 2014, following careers as an opera singer, teacher in an inner city high school and program officer for a foundation.
In those six years she has published five books – North of the Tension Line, The Audacity of Goats, Robert’s Rules, and now A Small Earnest Question, all part of the North of the Tension Line series, and Reflections on a Life in Exile.
It is a pleasure to welcome to MBB, J.F. Riordan
Segment Two – Before I returned to my ancestral home here at WORT, I did a show very similar to Madison BookBeat on what was then known as Madison’ Progressive Talk the Mic 92.1 called Books and Beats. What we’ve got for you now is an archived interview I conducted in 2007 for that show with then-Senator Joe Biden about his book Promises to Keep. I think you’ll get a sense of what he’s like as a person and a politician from this conversation, which I’m able to share with WORT listeners courtesy of Van Edwards and iHeart media. And to explain the beginning of our chat, it took place shortly after the University of Wisconsin Press published my first book, Madison the illustrated sesquicentennial history, vol 1. That is where Joe Biden chose to begin our time together. I have to say, he took me by surprise, and I’m not entirely happy with my response, but in the interests of the historical record, I share it with you now.
