Help to Close the Concentration Camps!
I’m Kim Gasper-Rabuck, and I’m here on behalf of The Coalition to Close the Concentration Camps. I would like to tell you about an important action taking place in Chicago on Sunday, October 13th.
The Coalition to Close the Concentration Camps calls for the immediate closure of all detention centers, open-air camps which are basically dirt floors surrounded by fences and barbed wire, for-profit prisons and so-called “shelters” that hold children who have been separated from their families at the border. We support the rights of all asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants who wish to enter the country. Locally we held our first action here in Madison with a speak-out on July 12th, which attracted more than two hundred and fifty people on short notice.
Nationally, the Coalition to Close the Concentration Camps is working to build a long-term mass movement and to organize repeated direct actions and protests until the concentration camps are shut down and amnesty is granted to all. The objectives are simple—to close the camps and reunite separated families, and to change anti-immigrant immigration policies.
You can be part of a contingent of Madison activists and concerned citizens participating in the Coalition’s National Day of Action. Actions will be occurring in cities across the country during the weekend of October 12th to the 14th, which is also Indigenous People’s Day. On Sunday, October 13th, we will be traveling by bus to Chicago to join organizations working with us. There, we will protest Amazon, which makes tens of millions of dollars developing technical support, like facial recognition, for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. Bus tickets are $20 per person, with sliding scale donations accepted. We plan to leave Madison at 9 a.m. and return by 8 p.m. Please come to Chicago with us on Sunday, October 13th, and join others from all over the Midwest to oppose the concentration camps, and to help bring down the government and private system that supports it. For bus tickets, email ccccMadisonwi@gmail.com with TICKETS in the subject line. For more information, go to closethecampsoct.org.
The Kiosk brings you commentary from members of the public. All the ideas expressed are the speaker’s. Have an idea for your own two-minute commentary? Email kioskevent@wort-fm.org and put “Commentary” in the subject line.
