It was June 28th, 1969, in the early morning hours when police began a surprise raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York. But the arrests didn’t go as planned when people started to fight back, which sparked the movement for LGBT rights in America known as the Stonewall Riots.
Now in June, almost 50 years after the first protests, Pride month is celebrated with marches and festivities for the community. One way Madison is celebrating Pride is through a local storytelling event, where members of the LGBT community can share their stories on-stage.
Joining Eight O’Clock Buzz host Kai Brito by phone is the emcee for the event, comedian, writer and wannabe soccer mom herself, Dina Nina Martinez.
