On Friday night, 19-year old Tony Robinson was shot and killed by Madison Police Officer Matt Kenny after police were called to an apartment on Williamson Street. Little is known about what triggered the call to police or what happened after Officer Kenny arrived on the scene. Madison Police Chief Mike Koval has said that Robinson was unarmed but did strike Officer Kenny during the incident. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and then saw Robinson’s body taken away in an ambulance. Coincidentally, State Representative Chris Taylor, who wrote the 2014 law reforming investigations of officer-involved shootings, happened to be at a gas station across the street and heard the gunshots.
What followed was an outpouring of grief, shock, and rage from many Madison residents. A crowd gathered in the street in front of the crime scene Friday night. Many marched to Madison City Hall and demanded answers from the police department.
Helena White was there and brings us this report from the events on Friday.
