In spite of the devastation wrought by the recent earthquakes, a small but determined group of Puerto Rican guitarists are pushing ahead with a planned guitar festival on February 7th and 8th. One of the organizers, Frances Karim Chiroque, recently performed in Madison for a concert organized by the Madison Classical Guitar Society.
MCGS President Christopher Allen will travel to Puerto Rico for the festival where he will present a solo concert and give master classes. On Saturday, January 18th, Allen also will perform a benefit concert to support the effort at Lakeside Street Coffee House.
On January 14th, he discussed these efforts with WORT’s Peter Haney and played several selections live on air, including José Ignacio Quintón’s famous “El Coquí.” The program also included selections from Frances Karim Chiroque’s YouTube channel.
