The year starts with a tragedy as a fire in State Street on January 8th claims the life of Madison fireman Daniel Parkinson at the age of 33 due to smoke inhalation. This continued a season of fires starting with a campus fire at the McArdel institute that destroyed 4 years of cancer research, within a week the State Street fire, four days later the Congress Bar and Restaurant burns, and a day after that a natural gas explosion destroys the Madison gas and Electric offices on Fairchild street. On June 28th at 4:30 Pm is at the Villas zoo Ruth Ellen Freedman ignored warnings by her mother and crawled under a fence blocking the public off of Winkie the Elephant with some other children. After going to Winkie’s cage and taunting Winkie, Ruth Ellen is pulled in and stomped to death. Combat casualties include The sons of two next door neighbors who both died in a period of two months
