Carlos Eduardo Gacharna came to Madison when he was 7, seeking a better life from his native Columbia. Gacharna attended multiple schools as his family moved, eventually graduating from Memorial High School and then from the University of Wisconsin Madison Art Department, where he studied ceramics and glass. As an outsider, art, he says, became a way of making a stronger connection. Now, Gacharna’s trying to help others make that connection. Gacharna’s the facilitator at the Madison Public Library’s Making Justice program, which targets art workshops for youth of color that have largely been left behind in one of the nation’s most inequitable cities.
