It was just misting around 3:30pm this afternoon, when a man was shot in the 100 block of State Street, just off the Capitol Square. That sent nearby pedestrians streaming for safety in the nooks of nearby buildings, the mood clashing with the holiday atmosphere of lights that adorned State Street.
Witnesses say they heard several gunshots.
The victim was brought out of Michelangelo’s shortly after, and taken to a nearby hospital and is undergoing surgery. Personal effects were seen laying in the middle of State Street, including a wallet and an orange prescription bottle.
As of 5:30pm, Madison police were still gathering evidence, though the rain later this evening appeared to be complicating matters.
Police are also collecting video evidence of the shooting. A Madison police spokesperson says digital evidence – from the city’s downtown surveillance network as well as footage from nearby businesses – will play a large role in this investigation because the area is so heavily recorded.
The 100 block of State Street was still cordoned as of 5:30 this evening, and the scene was later cleared around the time of this broadcast.
