For the last two decades, Sondy Pope has represented Wisconsin District 80 in the state assembly. However, earlier this year, Pope announced her retirement and is leaving the seat for the first time in 20 years. There are five candidates running in democrat primary and two running in the republican primary.
Continuing our coverage of the 2022 primary election, host Carousel Bayrd talks with two of the candidates vying for District 80, Mike Bare and Anna Halverson.
Mike Bare currently represents District 32 (City and Town of Verona) on the Dane County Board, and formerly served the City of Verona as Alder, sat on Verona’s Plan Commission, and chaired the City of Verona’s Parks and Recreation Commission. Mike is also a former longtime aide to progressive champion U.S. Senator Russ Feingold. He helped found and lead Wisconsin’s chapter of New Leaders Council, which promotes the next leaders of Wisconsin’s progressive movement. He is also a small business owner.
Anna Halverson works with people with disabilities and their families. Anna has been active in Moms Demand Action since 2016, organizing and advocating to reduce gun violence through grassroots and legislative action. Anna has worked as a classroom teacher, senior instructor, and in-home therapist for students with Autism. She has also worked in the Department of Workforce Development and Wisconsin Center for Educational Research.
