In 1982, the Milwaukee Journal published a map of “Ethnic Groups in Wisconsin.” The map legend shows distinct colors for areas settled by people from the British Isles, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe. A good chunk of the map, however, is colored light blue, for “diverse nationalities or Indian,” with no other explanation, and certainly no detailing of those who might be from non-European nations, such as Mexico. Yet, Mexicans and other Latin American immigrants have been part of Wisconsin’s history since before it became a state.
Milwaukee native Sergio González seeks to set the record straight with his new book “Mexicans in Wisconsin.” He joins Eight O’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing in the studio.
