What choir director would open up his well-renowned choral ensemble to anyone in the community? No auditions, just show up, rehearse for a week, then sing in a performance at Madison’s Capitol Theater. Leotha Stanley, that’s who. It’s an inclusionary gesture to celebrate a man with a message of inclusion, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leotha Stanley usually directs the Mt. Zion Baptist Choir, but once a year, he becomes the director of the Martin Luther KIng Community Choir, which performs next Monday, January 19. It’s not too late to join up, either, as rehearsals start Tuesday, January 13. Leotha Stanley and vocalist Julius Johnson joined Monday Buzz host Brian Standing in the WORT studios.
