Today in 1913: Civil-rights activist Rosa Parks is born in Tuskegee, Alabama. In 1943, Parks will become one of the NAACP’s first women members. She will also join the Montgomery Voters League to encourage black registration.
In her most famous act of resistance, on December 1st, 1955, Parks will refuse to surrender her seat to a white passenger in a city bus, sparking the successful Montgomery bus boycott. Parks’ activism will make it impossible for her to find work in Montgomery. So she will move to Detroit and continue the struggle.
It’s today’s Action Calendar!
