The future of the Dane County jail has become the center of a storm of controversy in Madison over the past few weeks. The Young, Gifted and Black Coalition have made the proposed renovation and expansion of the jail the focus of their Black Lives Matter campaign, stopping traffic and storming county committee meetings to try to persuade the county board to redirect 8 million dollars away from a capital study on a new jail and to black community-led social programs. Young, Gifted and Black aren’t the only local group working on this issue. Madison Organizing in Strength, Equality and Solidarity — or MOSES — is an interfaith group looking to reduce incarceration. Ann Pooler is on MOSES’ New Jail Response Team. She joined the Buzz on January 19, 2015.
