In tonight’s episode of the Perpetual Notion Machine, we discuss the recent finding of as many as seven Earth-like planets orbiting a star in the TRAPPIST-1 system. And it’s one of the closest to Earth, a mere 40 light years away. PNM’s Will Cushman talks with Sanjay Limaye, Senior Scientist at UW-Madison’s Space Science and Engineering Center. Sanjay describes what exoplanets are all about and some of the methods of finding them. One, as was used in this discovery, is the transit method, where a small black dot can be seen moving across a large bright colored star. On a separate topic. Sanjay also talks about new research he is doing concerning the planet Venus.
