A judge in Brazil’s Supreme Court this past week introduce new corruption investigations into dozens of the country’s most powerful politicians, dealing yet another blow to the beleaguered government of President Michel Temer.
Altogether, a third of the cabinet and nearly a third of the Senate will be target of inquiries into this new phase of the colossal scandal that emerged three years ago around Brazil’s national oil company, Petrobras.
The new inquires into politicians named by corrupt former officials of the construction giant Odebrecht, come at a crucial time for President Temer and his scandal-ridden government as he is trying to win approval in Congress for an overhaul of the crisis-plagued pension system in his quest to restore confidence in Brazil’s economy.
Part of a major probe dubbed Operation Car Wash, these investigation are projected to drag on for months, or even years, adding pressure on a leader already facing a case accusing him of running on a ticket that got millions of dollars of illegal campaign donations.
