Are you a DJ looking for the opportunity to host a show on WORT? Have you always wanted to be on the radio, but don’t have any experience? Do you listen late at night, like what you hear and think you can do as well or better on the air? Then now’s your chance to get involved with community radio and start learning the skills you need to put together a great program and share it with our local and global communities!
Show openings on WORT become available very rarely at this point, and most of the time you have to “start at the bottom,” meaning the overnight shift. However, as Madison grows in population with more late night and third shift workers these days, plus the ability to hear all shows on the internet in other time zones and at any time by listening to the archives, there are definitely more possibilities than ever before to build an audience for late nights.
We have the following 3 hour program shifts available right now:
- Tuesday overnights [Wednesdays 2-5 am weekly]
- Alternate Wednesday overnights [Thursdays 2-5 am every other week]
- Saturday late nights [Sundays 3-6 am weekly]
Programming is “free-form” for Tuesday and Wednesday overnights, meaning you can play pretty much whatever you want within FCC and legal guidelines. Your show can be any genre or mix of genres, but we prefer it to be mostly music, primarily from outside of the mainstream. The Tuesday overnight show follows a garage/experimental/punk/electro-jam rock program, and Wednesday follows a Spanish rock show and alternates with a DJ who featurer jam bands and rare recordings. Saturday late nights follows a hip hop show and we’d prefer to keep that program content as conscious hip hop and late night dance party music.
If you already have a recorded program demo, or if you can record a three hour show for us sometime soon to include with your application, that would be ideal. We’d have a chance to hear what your program would sound like and regardless of whether you are interested in and offered a permanent shift, we may be able to use it with our automation system in an emergency.
You can apply by filling out a Music Programmer’s Application online here, or download a copy and email it to musicdirector@wortfm.org. You can also print out a copy and mail it to the station, attention: Music Director, 118 South Bedford St, Madison, WI 53703 or come by here and fill one out in person.
You’ve stayed up late at night listening to WORT…now put those night owl tendencies to work, and create your own show! The possibilities are endless, so get your imagination going and send us your ideas, and please also share this news with others who may be interested.
