In September, a car chase through Monona ended with the death of Elliot Johnson. According to the responding officer, Johnson took his own life by shooting himself in the head after crashing his vehicle and being confronted.
On Friday, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne announced that the officer involved in the case won’t face any criminal charges.
In the immediate aftermath of the death, protests throughout Madison and Monona popped up, with organizers arguing that the Monona PD was concealing the truth behind the case.
For more on the investigation, and recent state-level efforts at police reform, WORT Producer Jonah Chester spoke with Black Radical — who requested we use that name — a leading organizer with local social justice group Black Umbrella.
