The last two shows of the XL II 90 Live Music Radio Hour (Friday Night, Midnight-2AM) took listeners deep into the worlds of two improvisational bands playing shows right here in Madison. As always, these last two shows are available for streaming for two weeks at archive.wortfm.org
On October 2nd, we were proud to feature our first-ever band interview with Spafford in advance of their October 9 appearance at the Majestic Theatre. Spafford hails from Phoenix, AZ and have been tearing it up on the improvisational music scene since 2009. Joined by guitarist Brian Moss, bassist Jordan Fairless, drummer Nick Tkachyk and keyboardist “Red” Johnson, we talked about Spafford’s origins, why they make music, and the role the fans have played in building something with he band. Interweaved with the interview were a number of tasty live Spafford tracks, with a specific emphasis on past shows here in Madison and Wisconsin. Two highlights came from past performances at the Majestic Theatre, with the “Majestic Jam -> Alternate Beginning” from an October 17, 2017 show and “Weasel->Palisades->Weasel” from an October 19, 2019 performance standing out.
Some portions of the interview weren’t able to be included in the broadcast. Check out this #InterviewExtra video where Brian, Nick, Jordan, and Red answer the question: “What was your first concert?”
On October 9th, we decided to provide some late night music for all those looking for more after the Kitchen Dwellers’ Friday night show at the High Noon Saloon. We focused on bringing listeners two solid hours of Kitchen Dwellers’ jam grass energy. To mix things up a bit, we featured two sets of all cover material, ranging from Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” to Duran Duran’s “”Hungry Like a Wolf” to Blackstreet’s “No Diggity.” And no Kitchen Dwellers show would be complete without some Pink Floyd and so we closed out the show with an extended “Foundations -> Pigs (Three Different Ones).”
