(WORT)–Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has repeatedly condemned the influence of money in politics and what he calls a “rigged economy.” But the obstacles the Vermont senator has faced in seeking the Democratic Party nomination reveal that the political process is rigged too. That’s according to Patrick Barrett, whose article “Can We Change the Political System? Strategic Lessons of the Bernie Sanders Campaign” was published last Friday by Truth-Out.
Barrett is the Administrative Director of the Havens Center for Social Justice at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He talks with WORT’s Darien Lamen about third party candidates, the limits of electoral politics, and the rightward drift of the U.S. political system.
