Odonata, or dragon and damselflies, are an order of insects that have existed, in one form or another, since the Triassic, at least 250 million years ago. That makes them older than dinosaurs, and a hundred times older than human beings. One Wisconsin species, the Hines Emerald, has the dubious distinction of being the very first dragonfly listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
