Inspired by the Linda Lindas’ viral performance of a song called “Racist, Sexist Boy” at the LA Public Library last week, today former host Karma Chávez returns to the WORT airwaves to talk about punk and DIY culture with Mimi Thi Nguyen.
They spend an engaging hour discussing BIPOC women in punk, the community-creating power of zines, and whether we’re really gearing up for a “riot grrrl summer.”
Mimi Thi Nguyen is associate professor of gender and women’s studies and Asian American studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is a self-proclaimed punk and has made zines since 1991, including Slander (formerly known by other titles) and the compilation zine Race Riot.
