To impeach, or not to impeach. With all apologies to William Shakespeare, that is the question roiling Congress this week. Robert Mueller’s long-awaited report has fueled an intense debate. Centrist Democratic leaders, such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, publicly worry that, with a Republican Senate that has already refused to convict, a failed impeachment attempt could just put wind in President Trump’s sails heading into the 2020 elections. Impeachment advocates, mostly on the Democratic left, but also including Michigan Republican Justin Amash, argue that Congress has an obligation to impeach, in order to uphold the constitution.
