The state Assembly is done for the year. It adjourned for the last time without passing one of the most controversial bills of the year, a proposal that would ban so called sanctuary cities.
The bill would prohibit Wisconsin municipalities from enacting or enforcing policies that block federal or state laws relating to undocumented immigrants. It would also require local governments work with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Immigrants rights group Voces de la Frontera bussed people from across the state to Madison to testify against the bill at a public hearing in the fall. When a similar bill was proposed in 2016, they organized a “day without Latinos” rally that drew around 30,000 protesters to the Capitol.
WORT producer Nina Kravinsky spoke with Voces de la Frontera member Mario Garcia Sierra earlier this week.
