Witze is a correspondent for the journal Nature and Kanipe is working on a series of books for astronomy enthusiasts called Annals of the Deep Sky. Last year, they published Island on Fire: The Extraordinary Story of a Forgotten Volcano That Changed the World, a book they co-wrote about an 18th century eruption of a volcano in Iceland that changed the course of history. We discuss how they marry narrative and science for a compelling read, their reporting and writing process and ethical issues in science journalism.
