Drummer, singer, bandleader, composer, producer and entrepreneur Terri Lyne Carrington is a trailblazer and bridge-builder in the jazz world. Join host Steven Braunginn on the Thursday, August 13 edition of Strictly Jazz Sounds as he recognizes Carrington’s historic victories in the 68th Annual DownBeat Magazine critics poll.
Carrington was a triple winner in the poll, becoming the first female instrumentalist to win the Jazz Artist category. Her 2019 release Waiting Game (Motéma) was voted the top Jazz Album and her band Social Science nabbed the Jazz Group category. Carrington is also a three-time Grammy Award winner. SJS will showcase Carrington’s genre-bending, historic rise, exploring her earliest works and rejoicing in her Grammy winning recordings, with Waiting Game featured in the third hour. The show will also explore the musicians who ranked in DownBeat’s “Rising Star Jazz Artist” category, giving listeners a look at who’s capturing the ears and eyes of jazz critics today. Tune in to Strictly Jazz Sounds on Thursday, August 13, 2-5PM on WORT 89.9-FM, your place for jazz.
