Local Madison band, Subject to Change, played the Access Hour and explored how playing music and creating art can heal trauma.
From the band:
Over the last two years, we have all felt the devastating effects of isolation that have left us to struggle with trauma on our own. “Trauma” is quickly becoming a buzzword in our society; yet it still captures, in a single word, the unwelcome activities/thoughts/events that occupy our conscious and subconscious, rent-free.
So how are we supposed to move forward in these times when methods of tackling personal trauma are still rarely taught in our society?
Performance art, like music, had been used for thousands of years to allow us to heal with our community. That being said, Covid-19 has stripped this away from us and made it especially difficult for performing artists to play their role in our society.
That is why I have brought together a collective of artists from different parts of the Madison art community, some aspiring, others highly experienced, to produce a video script I wrote written for my band to illustrate a personal breakthrough in self-healing. . . ”
