The United Nations diplomat charged with finding a way to resolve Syria’s civil war, Staffan de Mistura, said Friday that after nearly 10 days of talks in Geneva, both sides had agreed on a “clear agenda” for further negotiations.
As the war enters its seventh year, both the government of President Bashar al-Assad and the coalition of opposition groups have agreed to discuss an inclusive government, a new constitution, elections to be held under United Nations supervision, counterterrorism and security.
De Mistura said that the next round of discussions would be held later this month, after he reported to Secretary General António Guterres and the Security Council next week.
Lead negotiator for the Syrian opposition, Nasr al-Hariri, said that the latest round of discussions “was more positive” than previous talks, and that “we formed acceptable agreements to create a framework as a starting point.”
